Our Roots & Heritage | Papa Turney's Old Fashion BBQ

From a Humble Trailer to the Waterfront
The journey began in July 2009. Armed with a deep love for Tennessee flavor, Mike "Papa" Turney and his sweetheart Gwatholyn "Miss Zeke" Turney launched a simple food truck. They spent years perfecting their craft on the road before transforming their mobile dream into Nashville's premier lakeside smokehouse destination.

Born on Jefferson Street
Papa Turney's isn't just about food, it's about a lifelong rhythm. Mike Turney grew up immersed in the historic music scene of Nashville's legendary Jefferson Street clubs. He designed this restaurant to carry that torch forward, merging authentic, slow-smoked Tennessee barbecue with the soulful energy of live blues.

A Legacy of Family Artistry
Every corner of our venue tells a personal story. From the hand-crafted wood carvings by Mike's niece, Maya Papaya Turner, to the custom, vibrant stained glass windows designed by his sister, Betty Turney Turner, Papa Turney's is a living gallery shaped entirely by the hands of our family.
